Everton fans made the 186 mile trek to Selhurst Park on Saturday…watching £40m Sigurdsson, £35+m Richarlison, £20+m Schneiderlin, £25+m Keane, £30m Pickford…a bench with Walcott, Tosun…

Whatever you think of these players, however you rate their impact, they are a club that has supported managers in the transfer market, allowing them to make shrewd investments, like Lukaku, generating further funds to reinvest to at least try to compete with the big boys.

They are a forward thinking club with a working class fan base, doing well to generate funds despite an ageing ground with a modest 39,572 capacity.

Yesterday I saw that their long standing chairman and fan Bill Kenwright, has gifted the fans on official coaches a fiver each to get a pint, no fanfare, no publicity stunt, just gratitude and decency for their efforts following the team (see below).

We can only dream of our long standing owner and fan (?) showing similar gratitude to our supporters making the 345 mile trip to Brighton.

We can only dream of our club supporting its  manager to make shrewd investments, to attempt to compete, to be forward thinking, to maximise advertising revenue to improve the staff and facilities.

I expect the response from the usual Ashley apologists may be to cite the small difference in league positions that Everton’s investment has made, but that’s really not the point, it’s a question of ambition allied to ability.

A club in a similar working class area to us, with almost thirteen thousand less seats in their stadium, with similar prize money from the previous season (£128m -v- £123m) shouldn’t be supporting their manager to such a greater extent, trying so much more than we are.

All of us have an opinion on how much better Rafa could/would do with six or seven £20m+ players at his disposal.

So whilst I dream of us having a fan like Kenwright at the helm, how many fans of other teams cast envious eyes towards our club?

Our manager?

Personally I think if you take the top four out of the equation, every other club, even Arsenal and Man U, wouldn’t be unhappy with Rafa in their hot seat.

Our players?

Lets be honest, maybe only the bottom six would swap squads with us.

Our owner?

A big fat nothing…in every way.
