Dr. Terry Dubrow is speaking out about the recent discourse surrounding Jim Carrey’s looks.
“They’ve been asking me about Jim Carrey, Bradley Cooper. It’s like, what do you say when you’re confronted with that stuff? It’s so mean, right?” Dubrow, 67, said of paparazzi frequently asking him to weigh in on celebrities’ appearances during his Monday, March 9, appearance on Tori Spelling’s “MisSpelling” podcast.
The plastic surgeon continued, “The big deal that just happened with Jim Carrey and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Paris, and he looks so different, and all [critics] wanna do is talk about the way poor Jim Carrey looks.”
Carrey, 64, made a rare public appearance at the 51st César Awards in Paris on February 26 to accept an Honorary César Award. Following the awards show, footage of Carrey’s acceptance speech went viral as fans commented on the Grinch star’s unrecognizable facial features, with some people even going so far as to speculate that he was replaced by a clone.

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer,” Gregory Caulier, the general delegate for the César Awards, said in a statement after the bizarre clone theory began to circulate. “From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions. He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”
The statement continued, “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again. For me, it’s a non-issue. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his benevolence, his elegance.”
Dubrow said on Monday that fans were “used to seeing” Carrey looking “young” for “so many years,” admitting that the actor does look “different” now.
“I still think he looks great,” the Botched star continued.
While Dubrow does not know whether Carrey has ever had plastic surgery, the doctor said that swelling in someone’s face could “take a long time to go down” after a procedure and thus temporarily change someone’s appearance.
“He’s kind of our national comedic treasure. Can’t we be a little more kind?” Dubrow added. “Every plastic surgeon in the world is going online and talking about, ‘There’s less skin in his upper eyelids and his brows are higher,’ and they’re, like, dissecting him with a microscope, which is so unfair, I think, and uncool. … Don’t body-shame people and don’t body-shame celebrities. It’s kind of like body-shaming to really be doing this.”
Dubrow also called for empathy from fans, as Carrey could be “affected” by the criticism.
“So, if you’re human, it bugs you, and I just think it’s really uncool,” he concluded.
