Sarah Shahi broke her silence on what led to her shocking split from Adam Demos.
During the Tuesday, February 10, episode of Kristin Cavallari‘s “Let’s Be Honest” podcast, Shahi, 46, revealed it has been one year since she parted ways with Demos, 40. She also broke down the early days of their relationship — including the lessons she learned from the experience.
The former couple originally met on the set of Sex/Life in August 2020. At the time, Shahi was separated from then-husband Steve Howey, whom she was married to for 11 years. Shahi and Howey, 48, who share three kids together, ultimately finalized their divorce in 2021.
Shahi recently broke her silence to Us Weekly about their split, sharing in January, “There was an element of the relationship that people really felt belonged to them, which was very sweet and heart- warming.”

She continued: “The flip to that is when things end, you feel like you’re going through it twice. You’re going through it emotionally on a personal level, and then you’re going through it again on a much bigger level.”

Sarah Shahi Reveals When Her and Adam Demos Ended Their Romance
During the episode, Sarah Shahi confirmed that her and Adam Demos “broke up last year,” adding, “Talking about this definitely feels bittersweet. But I think he’s an incredible human and our ending had no table flipping or any anger.”
Shahi referred to the breakup as “just two people whose future stopped rhyming” after several years together. “It was as simple as that,” she added.

Sarah Shahi recalled meeting Adam Demos on set of Sex/Life when he thought she was a production assistant based on how she was dressed. Despite not taking an interest in him at first, Shahi revealed the moment that changed.
“I just remember I was hearing him speak about his relationship with his mother. I just overheard little bits that he was leaking about himself and who he was,” she noted. “I found that to be really attractive. So then when I sat next to my makeup artist, I was like, ‘Let’s do our makeup down there.’ Then I was like, ‘What kind of music do you like to listen to again? And what kind of drinks do you like?’ It started from there.”

What Lessons Did Sarah Shahi Learn From Her Relationship With Adam Demos
After making the first move, Sarah Shahi said she was “learning to not do that anymore.”
“I was very much in my masculine for a long time and always making the first move. I am always being the initiator of things. Within this last year of chasing d*** and it not going anywhere, I’ve decided to take a different role,” she explained. “I’ve decided that I want to be more in the receiving mode. I want be more in my grounded femininity for this next chapter.”
Shahi concluded: “It’s been a nice it’s a nice change for me. But I made the first move. We were out to drinks. We were out to drinks and after we were sitting across from each other and I just remember I kept inching closer and inching closer and inching closer.”
The actress said she was the one who “started making out with” Demos, adding, “I stuck my tongue so far down his throat … There aren’t too many times where you’re falling in love in real life, with the person you’re meant to fall in love with on screen. The fact that we did have five incredible years together — and he’s a beautiful person — and there was a lot we learned from one another. I can always go back to the first season and the romance is there. It was real.”
Sarah Shahi Reveals What Caused Adam Demos Split
“Without airing any kind of laundry, I do think when you have kids it’s hard to build a life when you have children unless the person truly, truly, truly wants that as well,” Sarah Shahi teased. “This is not a comment on him but more about the ways that I show up as a parent. I show up as a parent in a very specific way. [As a child] we could walk into our mom’s bedroom at any time and we walked into the bathroom at any time. I think that can be a little challenging for somebody who may not be used to having kids.”
She added: “It’s great for love to be easy but then the life stuff should also not be so difficult.”
Looking ahead, Shahi discussed how her approach to dating changed.
“I want my next relationship to be about me. I’m not looking for a stepparent. I just want a boyfriend,” she shared. “Someone that can just take me out and I can be on the beach and just be all sweaty and have sex all the time. I just want someone to purely service me, and if that grows into something else then great.”
