The only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne has played an active role in the British royal family for decades. Even as she gets older, the Princess Royal says she has no intention of slowing down.
“I don’t think there’s a retirement program on this particular life,” she told the Press Association in a January 2025 interview. “It really isn’t written in, no. It isn’t really an option, no, I don’t think so.”
Anne began her royal duties as a teenager and is now the patron of over 300 organizations. In addition to her work and passion for horses, Anne is also a mother and grandmother. She was married to gold medal–winning equestrian Mark Phillips from 1973 to 1992, and the couple share two kids, son Peter and daughter Zara.
She then married Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence the same year she split from Phillips, and the two remain together.

Queen Elizabeth II
Anne’s mother, Elizabeth, ascended to the throne in 1953, when Anne was 3 years old. Elizabeth’s coronation made Anne a princess by default, but Elizabeth later designated her only daughter the Princess Royal in 1987. Anne is only the seventh woman ever to hold that title.
The two shared a close relationship, and when Elizabeth died in 2022, Anne was by her side.
“I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother’s life,” she said in a statement at the time. “It has been an honor and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys. Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting.”
Prince Phillip
Anne enjoyed a close relationship with her father, with some saying that she was Philip’s favorite child. Like Philip, Anne is known for her love of sports and her unshakable work ethic.
“[Philip] always had more fun with Anne. Charles is more like the Queen, while Anne is very like Prince Philip,” Eileen Parker, a friend of the royal family, told the Daily Mail in a 2017 story.

Anne reflected on Philip’s life after he died in 2021, saying, “My father has been my teacher, my supporter and my critic, but mostly it is his example of a life well lived and service freely given that I most wanted to emulate.”
She added, “His ability to treat every person as an individual in their own right with their own skills comes through all the organizations with which he was involved.”
Mark Phillips
A captain in the British Army and an Olympic gold medalist, Mark met Anne, appropriately, at a horse riding event in Mexico City. They married in 1973, and the couple share Anne’s only two kids.
Though they didn’t announce their intentions to divorce until 1989, it is believed that their marriage was a tumultuous one, as both became subject to rumors of extramarital affairs. Mark even had a daughter with another woman, born in 1985.
Now a private citizen, Mark is still involved in equestrianism, working as a course designer for horseback riding events.
Timothy Laurence
Anne and Timothy met in 1986 and were rumored to be romantically involved while she was still married to Mark. Speculation intensified in 1989 when personal letters from Anne to Timothy were stolen, seeming to point to their growing relationship. They married the same year that Anne and Mark divorced.
Like Anne’s ex-husband, Timothy is also a military veteran, having served in the Royal Navy. He was named the sovereign’s aide-de-camp in 2008 and became a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 2011.
Though he has no royal title or responsibilities, the vice admiral is often seen accompanying his wife as she navigates her own busy schedule. He was also by her side in 2024 when a horse riding accident landed Anne in the hospital with a concussion, even bringing her “a few little treats from home.”

Peter Phillips
Though Peter is Anne’s son and the nephew of King Charles, he has no royal title — a decision Anne and Mark made for both of their kids.
“We were always brought up on the understanding that we were going to have to go to work,” Peter said in the 2020 documentary Anne: The Princess Royal at 70. “We were going to have to go out and … earn our living. Regardless of the fact of who our grandmother was or who our mother was.”
Peter and Zara live on Anne’s Gloucestershire estate, Gatcombe Park, allowing for frequent visits between Anne, her kids and her grandkids.
“She loves seeing them ride, she loves having them round for Sunday lunches and taking them for walks,” he added. “Doing all the things that we would do as kids.”
He and his wife, Autumn Kelly, share daughters Savannah and Isla.
Zara Tindall
Like her mom, Zara is an avid equestrian, earning a silver medal at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Having seemingly inherited her mom’s work ethic, Zara is also involved in numerous charities and has her own equestrian-themed jewelry line, called Zara Phillips Collection.
Zara is married to rugby union player Mike Tindall, and they share three kids: daughters Mia and Lena and son Lucas.

King Charles III
Anne’s relationship with her older brother has only grown stronger as Charles ascended to the throne. Hello’s online royal correspondent Danielle Stacey observed in August 2024 that Anne “has always been a dedicated and hardworking member of the British monarchy, but purely from an observer’s point of view, it seems like her relationship with the King has deepened.”
Charles was married to Princess Diana from 1981 to 1996, and they shared Prince William and Prince Harry. He married Queen Camilla in 2005.
Prince Andrew
Anne’s younger brother, Prince Andrew, was born in 1960 and is currently on the outs with the rest of the royal family after enduring a series of controversies over the past decade. He was named in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and settled out of court with one of his alleged victims. Andrew has more recently been accused of financial wrongdoing and engaging with a Chinese spy.
In January 2025, Anne didn’t invite him to a royal dinner at Windsor Castle, despite Andrew living on the property, perhaps indicating a rift between the Duke of York and the rest of the royal family.
Andrew was married to Sarah Ferguson from 1986 to 1996. They share two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie.
