Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn were notoriously private throughout their six-year relationship.
The couple remained tight-lipped about their connection since its 2016 start, but Alwyn inspired many of Swift’s songs — including “London Boy” and “Cornelia Street” from 2019’s Lover. Outside of her lyrics, Swift rarely spoke publicly about their relationship, but she referenced her and Alwyn’s love story in her Netflix documentary, Miss Americana.
“I was falling in love with someone who had a wonderfully normal, balanced life,” she said in the film, which was released in January 2020. “We decided together we wanted our relationship to be private. I was happy. But I wasn’t happy in the way I was trained to be happy. It was happiness without anyone else’s input. We were just happy.”
Alwyn, for his part, spoke out in November 2018 about keeping his relationship with the “Mirrorball” singer as quiet as possible.
“Someone’s private life is, by definition, private,” the actor told British GQ at the time. “No one is obliged to share their personal life.”
Us confirmed in April 2023 that the couple called it quits. According to a source, Swift’s “fame factored into” the breakup.

Let's write a song together?’ If we hadn't been in lockdown, I don't think that would have happened, but I'm so glad that it did. We're so proud of that one. Alwyn discussed moving on from his relationship with Swift during a January 2025 interview with The Guardian — and his hopes for the public to do the same. “That’s something for other people to do,” he said. “We’re talking about something that’s a while ago now in my life. So that’s for other people. That’s what I feel.” When asked whether he felt like his past relationship overshadowed his career, Alwyn played coy. “I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control,” he said. “Right from the beginning, [I] tried to focus on the things that are meaningful for me: friends, family, work, of course. So, noise outside of that, I think I’ve done what lots of people who find themselves in the public eye do, which is just try and ignore it.” He added, “If you don’t, and if you let all of that other stuff in, and if it starts to affect you and your behavior, you’re living from the outside in. And then you’re pretty f---ed.”
