Latest Shocking Entertainment News: A Guide to Danish Queen Margrethe’s Family After Her Surprise Abdication
Margrethe II’s reign as queen of Denmark lasted more than 51 years before she announced her abdication in December 2023.
Margrethe made the surprise declaration during her annual New Year’s Eve address, stating that a February 2023 back surgery prompted her to think about stepping down.
“The operation gave cause to thoughts about the future — whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation,” she said, per CNN. “I have decided that now is the right time.”
The monarch, who turned 83 in April 2023, is abdicated the throne on January 14, the 52nd anniversary of her succeeding her late father, Frederik IX. Margrethe’s eldest son, Frederik X, then became king of Denmark.

Margrethe and her late husband, Prince Henrik of Denmark, who died at age 83 in February 2018, welcomed their firstborn in 1968. Frederik became the king of Denmark after his mother’s abdication. He has been married to Queen Mary since 2004. "It is my hope that the new royal couple will be met with the same trust and affection that have been shared with me," Margrethe said while announcing her abdication in December 2023. Frederik sparked controversy in November 2023 when he was seen with socialite Genoveva Casanova while on a private trip to Madrid. Casanova subsequently denied rumors of an affair. "I flatly deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederik and me," she said in a statement to Hola in Spanish, translated by Town & Country. "Any statement of this type is not only completely untrue but also distorts the facts in a malicious manner. This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honor, truth and privacy." Born in 1969, Joachim is Margrethe’s second and youngest child. After his brother became king, Joachim became fifth in line for the Danish throne after Frederik’s four children. In January 2023, Joachim’s four children officially lost their prince and princess titles and “His/Her Highness” styling, which they inherited at birth as grandchildren of Queen Margrethe. Margrethe released a statement at the time noting that she viewed the change as a “necessary future-proofing of the monarchy.” She continued: “It is my duty and my desire as Queen to ensure that the monarchy always shapes itself in keeping with the times. Sometimes, this means that difficult decisions must be made, and it will always be difficult to find the right moment. Holding a royal title involves a number of commitments and duties that, in the future, will lie with fewer members of the royal family.” Joachim was hurt by the move and told Denmark’s Ekstra Bladet: "It's never fun to see your children being mistreated like that.
