Latest Shocking Sports News: Number of goals and assists from all Newcastle United players in 2018/19 – Revealing stats

It is no secret as to where Newcastle United’s strengths and weaknesses have been this season.

The defence has outperformed most.

Only four of the top six (Arsenal and Man Utd have conceded more) and seventh and eighth placed Wolves and Everton (both 44) have conceded less than Newcastle’s 45.

However, at the other end of the pitch it is a much different story.

Only the really poor four teams at the bottom have scored less than Newcastle’s 36 goals. In fact, the next lowest total above NUFC is 43 goals (Palace).

The total number of goals and assists for every Newcastle player this season in the opening 36 Premier League matches.

The stats below are total number of goals directly involved in, then the split in brackets between goals and assists, then after each name the number of minutes played in Premier League this season (Stats from WhoScored).

A number of stand out points…

Salomon Rondon has been directly involved in 44% of Newcastle’s PL goals.

Ayoze Perez involved in 36% of them, Matt Ritchie 22%.

The bottom line though is that apart from those three, and in reality even involvement in eight goals isn’t really that great for Matt Ritchie, you have to question the contribution of so many players when it comes to creativity and goals at the sharp end.

Of the midfield and attacking players, Isaac Hayden is probably the only exception, having been involved in five goals and only playing marginally over half the number of PL minutes this season.

Decent contributions from defenders such as Schar and Clark who have been involved in seven goals between them. However, playing as a wing-back most of this season, we need more than Yedlin’s (three goals involvement) contribution moving forward.

I know there have been varying numbers of opportunities and there should be more expectation on some than others – but I think you do ave to question whether the contribution of any of the following is good enough when it comes to goal threat.

NUFC players who have been directly involved in only two goals:

Kenedy and Joselu.

NUFC players who have been directly involved in only one goal:

Shelvey, Ki and Muto.

NUFC players who have been directly involved in no goals:

Atsu and Diame.

I think we have a lot more to come from Longstaff and Almiron, both of them finding their feet in the Premier League.

However, when Rafa Benitez talks about the desperate need to bring in more quality, it’s not difficult to see what he is talking about.

Especially when to compound the problems, Mike Ashley looks set to refuse to allow any bid for Salomon Rondon.
