Latest Shocking Sports News: Worries over young Newcastle United player on loan – After overcoming serious medical condition

If anybody is deserving of a change of luck it is Liam Gibson.

The 21 year old Newcastle United left-back was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (inflammatory bowel disease) back in January 2015 and had to have an emergency operation in the summer of 2017.

Missing the entire 2017/18 season, the NUFC defender made an inspirational recovery to return to action at the start of this (2018/19) season.

Impressing for the Newcastle United second string, it helped get him a loan move to League One side Accrington Stanley in January.

After fighting back, Liam Gibson said before going out on loan:

“At one point during my illness I thought about packing in with playing football completely.

“I’m now back and have played nearly half a season so I’m very glad that I continued to stick at it.”

His contract is up at the end of the season and at 21 he needed this first team football in order to try and win a contract a permanent deal at Accrington Stanley or another club, with no new deal at Newcastle likely to be offered.

Having made four starts and a sub appearance in League One, things appeared to be on the up on a personal level, even though Stanley lost 2-1 to Blackpool on his last appearance (5 March 2019).

However, since that game, he has been ruled out with stomach issues (see below).

Stanley boss confirming on Thursday that the Newcastle loan player is still not available and will miss Saturday’s game at Burton Albion.

Hopefully these stomach issues  won’t prove too much of a setback for Liam Gibson and he can bounce back and play regularly, in order to pursue his footballing dream.

As well as being a brilliant example to others struck down by this terrible condition.

The Lancashire Telegraph – 21 March 2019:

ACCRINGTON Stanley will be without Liam Gibson again for their trip to Burton Albion tomorrow.

The Newcastle loanee has an ongoing stomach issue that has kept him out of action for the last three matches.

John Coleman:

“Liam Gibson has had a little bit of a setback this week, so we’ve got to monitor that.

“He has an ongoing problem with his stomach, so it’s something that we’ve got to mindful of. I hope he’ll play before the season is over.”

The Lancashire Telegraph – 15 March 2019:

STANLEY manager John Coleman will be without left back Liam Gibson for Rochdale’s trip to the Wham Stadium tomorrow due to a stomach problem.

“Liam Gibson’s been suffering with his stomach, it’s an ongoing problem for Liam unfortunately,” said Coleman.

“He was ill so he can’t play.”
